Dylan Mitchell made his first appearance in the starting lineup since arriving from Swindon Town on loan, while Michael Smith, Louis Britton and Sam Pearson all started against their former side.
Jake Wannell had the game’s opening chance when his downward header from a Charlie Cooper free-kick was held by Max Harris, before Yeovil’s starting Trialist dragged a shot wide inside the area from an Aaron Jarvis flick-on. James Dodd then saw a late run into the area end in a headed attempt held by Joe Day from Smith’s cross.
James Daly poked a shot past the post from Morgan Williams’ cross, before Britton nodded over the bar following a tantalising ball from Callum Wood. Coulson was next to go close, his 25-yard free-kick pushed behind for a corner by Ward as Weston began to grow into the game. From the corner, Pearson’s cross-shot from a short set-piece saw Ward scramble to hold underneath the crossbar.
Two minutes before the break, Pearson again made Ward work when his deflected shot from 18 yards saw Yeovil’s No.1 tip over the bar.
Half – Time: Weston-super-Mare AFC 0 – 0 Yeovil Town
During the opening 20 minutes of the second half, first-half Glovers substitute Brett McGavin fired over the angle of post and bar from 20 yards when a loose ball fell his way before Pearson and Britton had penalty appeals turned down when finding space inside the area.
The referee was to point to the spot when Britton won the ball from Wannell on the right touchline and drove inside, winning the foul from the Yeovil skipper as he entered the box. With Coulson stepping up to the spot, Weston’s No.7 calmly sent Ward the wrong way and drove his penalty into the bottom corner for the only goal of the afternoon.
Emlyn Lewis and Yeovil substitute Tahvon Campbell were both shown yellow cards for their part in an off-the-ball scuffle, while Will Dawes was shown yellow against his former side for his complaints to the officials afterwards.
As Yeovil threw everything at Weston late on, the Seagulls held out for a valuable pre-season win.
Scott Bartlett’s men will now spend the forthcoming week preparing for our opening Enterprise National League South clash away at Hornchurch next Saturday, August 9th.
