Interim Manager Scott Rogers named the same eleven that started the 1-0 victory over Chesham United, Scott Bartlett’s final game in charge before his midweek switch to Eastleigh.
Weston started the game brightly and were awarded a penalty in the very early stages. Luke Coulson and James Dodd were involved in an incisive move and the latter was tripped in the box by Josh Staunton.
Coulson, who recently penned a new deal with the club, stepped up and sent Adam Parkes the wrong way by burying the ball into the bottom corner of the net to give The Seagulls a dream start.
Weston were playing some lovely football at BlackGold Stadium, but to Poole’s credit they defended well from The Seagulls’ dangerous crosses into the box.
And when The Dolphins did manage to attack, they were met with some superb defending from Weston’s back four, in particular Emlyn Lewis’ header to clear a dangerous ball into the area.
That flicked header away proved to be even more significant minutes later when Rogers’ Weston side doubled their lead in Dorset. The influential Coulson whipped in a free-kick from close to the corner flag and Callum Wood headed home from around six yards via the underside of the crossbar to deservedly put The Seagulls two to the good.
HALF-TIME: Poole Town 0-2 Weston-super-Mare AFC
At the start of the second-half, Weston pressed for another as the dominant Dodd found Coulson, and his lovely pass with the outside of his foot found Sam Pearson in space, he then cut in from the left but his effort was just wide of the target.
Half-time substitute Jake Hicks, on for former Dolphin Jacob Jagger Cane, also did well in midfield to win the ball and release Coulson with an excellent pass. Coulson jinked his way into the area before seeing his low drive held by Parkes.
Poole kept plugging away though, and although Max Harris was never seriously tested, the outstanding Sam Avery was well placed to block one of the home side’s more promising attacks.
The lively Coulson earned a late free-kick when Staunton hauled him down on the corner of the area, but Coulson’s angled effort from the resulting set-piece just cleared the bar.
The full-time whistle blew shortly after to complete a memorable first game in charge for Rogers and his staff, as the interim manager and his players celebrated with the supporters after now going eleven games unbeaten in all competitions.
We now excitedly await Monday’s draw for the Fourth Qualifying Round, where Step 1 clubs will now enter the competition.
