Two trialists were named in the starting lineup by Seagulls manager Scott Bartlett, while Jason Pope made his first appearance in the matchday squad since suffering an injury last campaign.

Bobby Kamwa had a goal ruled out for offside after rounding Weston keeper Max Harris and finishing into an empty net, before Joe Thomas saw a strike crash off the bar following a County set-piece being lofted into the area.

Half-Time: Weston-super-Mare AFC 0 – 0 Newport County

The second half was to see more goalmouth action, Michael Reindorf volleying wide at the back post for the visitors when latching onto a cross from a Trialist.

Young Newport player Corey Evans saw a shot kept out by the feet of Harris following a cross by Ged Garner, before Callum Wood and Will Dawes both reacted sharply to block follow-up efforts.

Weston began to attack with more intent as the game grew on, substitutes Brandon Bak and Dawes firing wide of the target from 25 yards as the Seagulls went in search of the opener. Dawes then had a shot from 18 yards following a sharp exchange at a short corner. Garner then had a 25-yard attempt down the other end held low down by Seagulls substitute stopper Jakob Glover.

The visitors were to get the game’s only goal when Reindorf picked the ball up on the right touchline and drove inside away from his marker, slipping in Alexander-Walker who picked his spot and fired across Glover into the bottom corner.

Despite Weston’s late attempts to grab an equaliser by forcing a handful of corners, Newport dealt with the danger and held on for the win.

The positive performance from the Seagulls can now be taken into the next friendly, when we travel to Portishead Town on Friday 18th July, KO 7:30pm.
