Three changes were made from last Saturday’s opening day defeat at Hornchurch, with Luke Skinner, Emlyn Lewis and Jacob Jagger Cane starting. Will Dawes & Dylan Mitchell dropped to the bench, while Sam Avery wasn’t named in the matchday 18.
Taylor Clark saw a first-time 25-yard shot following a short corner blocked by a Weston foot, before Jack Barham scuffed an effort from 18 yards into the hands of Max Harris on the counter-attack. Starting for the first time, Skinner’s low cross when driving down the left narrowly evaded the runs of both Sam Pearson and Louis Britton.
Slight controversy then surrounded an opportunity for Britton, who rounded Haigh and slotted in on his left foot after a good run by Dan Martin. With the linesman’s flag up for offside, the referee pulled the play back for a foul on Martin 25 yards out. Luke Coulson curled narrowly over from the set-piece.
Half – Time: Weston-super-Mare AFC 0 – 0 Chelmsford City
Weston came out with the bit between their teeth at the beginning of the second period, Coulson testing Haigh from 25 yards who beat the attempt away well. Jagger Cane then drove over from 20 yards when a corner was headed clear in his direction, before Pearson tested Haigh at his near post when being found on the right-side of the area. Jagger Cane then saw an attempt blocked inside the box when latching onto a Pearson lay-off following a Coulson cross.
The Clarets then had a good opportunity just past the hour mark when substitute Shiloh Remy deceived Martin at the back post and cut back onto his left foot when controlling a deep pass, but he could only drag wide of the near post.
Skinner continued to make his presence felt inside the final minutes, seeing his backheel from a Coulson cross held by Haigh before seeing two 25-yard efforts held by the Chelmsford No.1.
The Seagulls now prepare for a tough trip to Chippenham Town on Tuesday evening, facing their local adversities in a 7:45PM KO.
