Ahead of the game in Wiltshire, manager Scott Bartlett made three changes to his starting line-up as Jason Pope, Will Dawes and James Waite replaced Callum Wood, Sam Pearson and Luke Coulson respectively.

The first chance of the night fell The Seagulls’ way less than a minute into the game as Louis Britton weaved his way into the box before shooting just wide.

The game then swung from one end to the other as The Bluebirds went close through a Luke Haines’ header, before Luke Skinner’s fierce shot was turned away for a corner. From the set-piece, Dawes played it diagonally to Jacob Jagger-Cane but he sidefooted just over from the edge of the area.

Skinner then went on an incredible 60-yard Maradona-esque run but his effort on goal was saved by Will Henry.

The Seagulls probably shaded the first-half and took a deserved lead just before the interval. Jagger-Cane, fabulous in midfield once again, took a quick and intelligent throw-in to Emlyn Lewis, who had galloped into the right side of attack. He got in behind a Chippenham defender before driving into the box and pulling the ball back to Dawes, who gleefully rifled the ball into the top of the net against his former side to break the deadlock.

HALF-TIME: Chippenham Town 0-1 Weston-super-Mare AFC

At the start of the second-half, the hosts had a good chance to equalise when Ezio Touray found a yard of space in the box, but Max Harris got down well low to his left to keep out the near-post effort.

However, The Bluebirds were on level terms moments later when the impressive Caine Bradbury angled a drive past Harris from the edge of the area.

Harris then made a solid stop from the busy Bradbury’s free-kick, before Britton made a promising run from the halfway line and teed up Jagger-Cane, but his drive was pushed away by Henry.

Britton nearly turned provider once more as he set up Dawes, but he couldn’t keep his shot down in a second-half that had turned into a fast and feisty encounter full of full-blooded tackling all over the park.

Fortunately for Weston, they weren’t left to rue that missed opportunity as James Dodd received the ball in midfield and played a pass to Michael Smith. The Northern Irishman looked up and crossed perfectly for Britton, who leapt like a salmon to head the ball past Henry to notch his first league goal for The Seagulls, while Smith now has three assists in the league to his name already

At the other end, Bradbury tried his luck from range but it was just over.

As the game reached injury-time, Weston looked fairly in control but there were hearts in mouths when Chippenham were awarded an indirect free-kick in Weston’s penalty area. Pope, outstanding at the heart of defence on his return to the starting eleven, played the ball back with his thigh and Harris, rightly, picked the ball up.

However, the referee misinterpreted the backpass law and penalised Weston. Fortunately, justice prevailed as the resulting free-kick ended up with Harris making a great save on his line.

Once Harris released the ball the referee blew his final whistle to end a thoroughly entertaining game, but more importantly a great performance and Weston’s first three points of the season.
